News: From Canada to Europe, Cigarette Smuggling Is a Concern
In Italy, the war against discount cigarettes smugglers has reached a level similar to the war on drugs in the U.S. Officials there estimate it's a $3.5 billion trade, run mostly by criminals associated with Mafia families.
Speed boats bring the illegal butts into the port cities in the Calabria and Puglia regions in the thick of night. Albania and Montenegro were once the preferred places to buy the cheap smokes, but crackdowns on smugglers have shifted home bases to other places, like the Greek island of Corfu, where cops recently seized four expensive speed boats equipped with four motors each.
The deaths of two Italian policemen in February were the sixth and seventh fatalities attributed to collisions with cheap cigarette smugglers in the country in the previous year.
